Kaolin in the spotlight on August 30 at Urêka!
On August 30, 2025, the Urêka Museum offers a special program dedicated to kaolin and porcelain:
- 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. - two departures for the guided tour of the temporary exhibition "Kaolin, from quarry to porcelain." Through this tour, narrated in two voices by our volunteers, immerse yourself in the fascinating world of kaolin, this white rock which, after extraction and transformation, becomes one of the jewels of ceramic art - porcelain. This material, at the heart of the industrial and artisanal history of Limousin, will be presented in its geological, technical, cultural and artistic dimensions by the two passionate speakers: Christiane Gady, SVT teacher, and Marie-Noêlle Carado, tour guide.
Free, reservation required, duration approximately 45 min.
- 6:00 p.m. - conference "Kaolin and petunze in Limousin in the 19th century" by François Xavier CHATENET, member of the Limousin Geology Society. It is no secret that Limoges owes its prosperity to the porcelain industry, thanks to the discovery of kaolin near Saint-Yrieix-la-Perche in 1769. However, many other deposits exist in Limousin, each with its own specificities. In addition, many other less famous regional rocks were necessary for the composition of porcelain: pegmatite from the Ambazac and Vigen mountains, quartz from Dorat and Saint-Quentin, etc. Their extraction and mineral processing occupied nearly a thousand people for a century.
The lecture will take place in the museum's auditorium. Free, reservations required, and last approximately 1 hour.

Exhibition "Kaolin: from quarry to porcelain"
From July 2 to Sept 21 2025 , come and discover the new temporary exhibition at the Urêka Museum.
Through a series of explanatory panels and a conference, immerse yourself in the fascinating world of kaolin, this white rock which, after extraction and transformation, becomes one of the jewels of ceramic art – porcelain. The tour is accompanied by an exhibition of porcelain works created by the ceramist Aurélie Vrignon (l'Atelier du Blanc) . Her creations – elegant vases, everyday objects with clean lines, sculptural pieces inspired by plants – interact with the material and reveal the finesse and transparency characteristic of Limousin porcelain.
An immersion at the crossroads of science, nature and art not to be missed!
